We received some great news today! My boy no longer needs to take a daily antifungal medication (Diflucan). Woo hoo!
He’s been taking 6 mL daily (50 mg/5 mL) for 15 months, and it’s ridiculously expensive ($81.03 every 11 days) – ack! That means that we’ve spent $3307 of insurance money on this one drug alone over the last 15 months. Thankfully, we have a great health care plan that pays for our prescription medications, but it still bothered me to be spending that much money on prescription drugs every couple of weeks.
He started the antifungal medication after he was diagnosed with hyper IgE syndrome (Job’s syndrome) due to the chronic thrush that he had. He also started a prophylactic antibiotic (Novo-lexin) which is technically supposed to be a lifetime prescription because that’s the best that the medical system can suggest for Job’s syndrome patients (i.e., a prophylactic antibiotic for life). Since antibiotics tend to cause fungal problems, we also thought he would be continuing with the antifungal as long as he was on the antibiotics.
But…
In December, when we had an appointment with our amazing naturopath, and when we reviewed Moses’ current medications and supplements, I voiced that my plan is to eventually get Moses off his prophylactic antibiotic and antifungal. Our naturopath said that she was mostly concerned with the long-term use of Diflucan because it’s really not meant to be a long-term medication and it’s hard on one’s liver. And, interestingly, Moses’ chiropractor says that Moses’ liver often needs clearing. When DH heard that, he too was on board to get Moses off Diflucan.
Moses actually hasn’t had thrush for a long time. Diflucan was successful in getting it cleared up, which allowed his mouth to heal. My long time readers might recall that the corners of Moses’ lips used to the chronically cracked and his mouth sore due to the infection and Nystatin wasn’t strong enough to clear it up. Gentian violet didn’t work either.
So, we brought it up with our pediatrician and she talked to our immunologist and they agreed that Moses can come off of Diflucan! Yay! I’m thrilled about it and pleasantly surprised that they agreed. I thought that they might suggest another antifungal like Nystatin to replace it, but they didn’t.
Moses is currently taking 3 drops of miracle mineral solution (MMS) a day, which has antimicrobial properties, and will hopefully keep his system in balance (despite the fact that he is still on a daily antibiotic). (You can read some testimonials about MMS and candida here). He’s also on a daily probiotic as well.
To clear his system homeopathically of the negative effects of having been on Diflucan for 15 months, I’ve started him on a homeopathic paper remedy for Diflucan tonight (basically I wrote Diflucan 30C on a piece of paper and put it in his pillow case). You can read more about homeopathic paper remedies here. Next time we see Moses’ chiropractor, he will also rebalance Moses’ system using total body modification (TBM).
Woo hoo hoo!! I’m thrilled about this, and I feel like this is another positive step in Moses’ healing journey.
May 19, 2012 – Uh, oh — the oral thrush is back. DH wants to start him back on the Diflucan to get it back until control, and so we will. Hopefully, he won’t be on it for long. Well, on the good side of things, his body has 3.5 months break from Diflucan…

Wow Janice that’s great news!!! In the healing game of snakes and ladders that one is DEFINITELY a ladder!
did the mms work for something?
Good question — hard to say. Given that the thrush it back, it obviously didn’t prevent the thrush, but I should mention that I haven’t been not completely consistent with MMS (Moses only gets it when he feels like drinking pineapple juice in the morning — there’s no other way to get it into him — it tastes horrible). He probably gets 3 drops of MMS 4-5 times a week.
I think the thrush is back due to the oral antibiotics he’s been on and he’s also been taking his oral puffers a lot more lately (likely a result of the recent homeopathic healing reactions). My mom is wondering if the recent thrush is also a healing reaction. I’m not sure at this point.
His mouth quickly got into rough shape though, so he’s back on Diflucan, in any case, and I hope the thrush clears quickly, and that we get him back off of Diflucan relately soon…
