I made Marsha’s Basic Apple Crisp recipe today with some of my own modifications. This recipe is glutenfree and dairy free.
4 C sliced apples
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 C water
1/5 C sugar (the recipe calls for 1 C of sugar, which was way too sweet for our family)
1/2 C canola oil (this was my substitution for margarine)
3/4 C glutenfree oat flour (you can just grind up glutenfree rolled oats in your blender for this part)
handful of hemp seeds (my addition)
couple of handfuls of glutenfree oatmeal (my addition)
Placed sliced apples in a greased dish, sprinkle with cinnamon, salt and vanilla extract over top. Pour water over all. Mix it up. Mix sugar, canola oil, oat flour, hempseeds and oatmeal with fingers until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples. Bake at 350 degrees until done, top is brown and crispy and apples are soft- about 40 minutes.
It was very good and the most “conventional tasting dessert” that I have made in a long time, but it was way too sweet for our taste (the first time, we did it with 1 C of sugar). Moses *loved* it though, and it worked out well because the other dessert that was made at the NYE dinner was apple pie.
January 7, 2011 – We made it a second time with 1/5 C of sugar and substituted some apples for strawberries and it was delish!
February 8, 2012 – We tried this with some maple syrup instead of the sugar and we loved it. I didn’t use a lot of maple syrup because DH doesn’t like things that are too sweet, so I drizzled more maple syrup on Moses’ portion. So easy and so good!
