I went to an information session about a potential wholistic school in St. John’s, NL. I’m completely thrilled about the idea.
As I mentioned before, it is the answer to a silent prayer that I have had about the type of school that I want Moses to attend. It is wholistic and Waldorf-inspired. Music, creativity, story-telling, creative-movement. Allowing kids to learn the way that they naturally learn. Experiential-learning. Of course, the school will meet all of the board of education’s curriculum requirements. The difference is the way the kids learn. For example, they may learn their ABCs through art. DH is also supportive of the idea because he was the type of student who learned best through experience. Plus, he’s a musician / electrician, so can very much appreciate the importance of music and learning through music.
Currently, Moses is going to a Montessori-based preschool on Saturday mornings and he *loves* it. I want him to continue to be interested in learning and think that school is fun! I am a life-long learner myself, and want to impart this value with my son. I attended a Montessori school in the Philippines when I was 6 years old and it was a fabulous experience for me. I learned so much very naturally and easily. My mom also homeschooled / unschooled me for one year in grade 3 during a period of transition for the family.
If you are not in Newfoundland and don’t have any wholistic or alternative schools in your area, you can consider starting one up. This initiative in Newfoundland was sparked by one mother’s desire for a wholistic school for her children. I know that many other alternative schools have had similar starts. Art schools, homeschooling or unschooling are other schooling options for a sensitive child. It may be that the neighbour school is the perfect fit for your child. It’s different for every child. Find out what works for your child and explore what options there are.
June 2, 2010 – We received more information about the wholistic school. It will be called Mosaic, a Whole Child School. As mentioned, we have definitely decided that this is where Moses will be attending school (assuming that there is enough interest in the community for this school to go ahead).
